When Margaret arrived, the house was already humming with early preparations. Word had spread through the family that Gloria was hosting a proper Sunday lunch — twenty guests, give or take. Extended family, neighbors, a few old friends she liked to impress.

Margaret walked into the kitchen expecting to be handed a list, maybe a grocery run, perhaps a dish she was expected to contribute. What she received was a small folded stack of bills and a firm set of instructions.

Gloria moved through the space like a conductor, gracious and glowing, accepting compliments for the beautiful home, the lovely gathering, the wonderful family she had built.

She told more than one guest, with a proud sweep of her hand, that her daughter-in-law had prepared the entire meal.

Margaret set the dishes on the table quietly and without ceremony. She had done what she could with what she had been given. There was rice, plain and well-cooked. There was a simple, light broth.
