The beam of my flashlight cut through the thick darkness of the ventilation shaft. I expected to see a family of mice, or perhaps a stray squirrel that had lost its way. Instead, two large, glassy eyes reflected the light right back at me.

My breath caught in my throat. It wasn’t a rodent.

An Unbelievable Discovery

Nestled deep inside the ductwork, surrounded by a makeshift nest of shredded insulation and stolen kitchen towels, was an animal that had no business being inside a suburban home. It was a massive, highly venomous exotic snake—an escaped pet from a neighbor down the street who had secretly been keeping exotic reptiles.

His incredible instincts told him that something dangerous was lurking right above our heads. The snake had been using the warmth of the kitchen vents to survive the chilly nights, its subtle movements and low-frequency vibrations completely hidden from human senses, but glaringly obvious to a well-trained dog.
