Elena stood up silently, smoothing the front of her simple grey cardigan. “Of course, Brenda.”

As she walked to the wine cooler, she heard the snickering.

Clara, her sister-in-law, was the center of attention tonight. Dressed in a sequined red gown that screamed ‘new money,’ she was stroking the arm of her husband, David. David looked smug. He had reason to be; he had just been promoted to Regional Sales Director for the North American branch of Nova Group, a massive conglomerate known for its ruthless efficiency and generous bonuses.

“David is just killing it,” Clara bragged, her voice shrill. “The partners at Nova love him. They say he’s on the fast track to VP. Honestly, it’s about time someone in this family brought in some real prestige.”

She cast a sideways glance at Elena, who was pouring the wine.

“No offense, Elena,” Clara smirked. “But Mark being a… what is he now? A freelance consultant? It sounds like code for ‘unemployed.’”
